Ted Kennedy Digs In On Health Care For All

By Ethan Kalvin

Now that Democrats hold a commanding lead in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House, Senator Kennedy's life long support for universal health care is more likely to come to fruition.

For most of Kennedy's career, he has been a strong supporter of universal health care/universal health insurance, reports the Boston Globe. And with Democrats holding overwhelming control in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House, health care reform in Kennedy's vision is more than likely.

Strong movement toward universal health care and heavy regulations for the health care industry are some of the initiatives we are likely to see coming up. And a never-before-seen effort to sway public opinion regarding health care will likely be upon us very soon.

The current mindset of the voters is clearly calling for some sort of health care reform. Maybe we won't see universal single-payer health care soon, but an intense effort to regulate insurance companies is clearly on the agenda.

As has been said, there's little chance for single-payer coverage to come to fruition, but the general consensus is that mandated health insurance and heavy insurance company regulation will likely be the issue of the day in the near future.

Acne Alternative Medicine: Chinese Medicine For Acne

By Samara Rylie

Over the years, the alarming degree of acne has brought about several researches on the condition. Unfortunately, acne skin condition still holds much uncertainty on its causes and reaction to certain medications. This is why more and more people are looking into natural products and acne alternative medicine to treat the skin condition.

One alternative medicine for acne is Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine has been around for thousands of years, and it's no surprise individuals are starting to embrace its healing properties as an acne alternative medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine often utilizes herbs and food sources to alleviate acne symptoms.

Diagnosis:

How is diagnosis done? In Chinese acne alternative medicine, the examiner will attempt to pinpoint the source of the condition and then recommend a treatment that corresponds to that source. There are two major factors believed to cause acne, and those are Heat and Dampness.

The Heat: in this case is associated with over exertion and excessive stimulation in the body that eventually causes inflammation. When there is too much friction or hostility in the body, it is claimed that hormonal imbalances occur and therefore cause breakouts and lesions. Pimples, rashes, infections, redness and inflammations characterize heat.

Dampness: This factor pertains to having too many fluids in the body, such as when water retention, indigestion, swelling and inflammation occur. It can be described as a balloon continuously being filled with water, which eventually results in swelling and rupturing. In this sense, dampness can be associated with sebum accumulation and bacterial growth. Pimples, pus, swelling, cysts and fluid expulsion characterize excess dampness.

In most cases, particular symptoms can help identify the source of heat or dampness. With acne alternative medicine, it is believed that discovering the source of heat or dampness can help you find its corresponding treatment.

Causes of heat:

- Overworking or excessive physical activity - Emotional stress such as anger or jealousy - Over-activated hormones - Heat from the environment

Causes of dampness:

- Insufficient flushing of waste and toxins through urination and perspiration - Impaired digestive functions - Water retention in the body - Humid or very moist environment

Treatment:

The goal of Chinese acne alternative medicine is to either stimulate or calm the body. Stimulation is associated with "hot" foods such as chili, black tea, basil, chives and cherries. Sources of food that are stimulating are used to treat acne symptoms that are caused by dampness in the body.

On the other hand, calming treatments are associated with "cooling" foods such as cucumber, agar, egg white, banana and gluten. The food sources used in this acne alternative medicine are supposed to counteract heat in the body that causes the acne symptoms mentioned earlier.

Traditional Chinese treatment is an acne alternative medicine and has no scientific proof on how they can treat acne. Though, cases have shown that its utilization of natural herbs and foods may have an indirect and positive effect on the general wellness of the body. Effectiveness varies among individuals and treatment may take a certain amount of time to work. Before jumping into any acne alternative medicine, always consult your healthcare provider first.

The Best Cure for Snoring

By Lacy Kasmond

Sleep deprivation has made many people ponder the question: What is the best cure for snoring? You have no doubt discovered that snoring creates difficulties not only with your spouse, but also in functioning during your work day. Why? Because sleep is essential for your physical health and your emotional well being. You must attach a high priority to finding the best cure for snoring. It is vital that you and your spouse get a good night's sleep.

Numerous snoring cures have been tried and re-tried over the years. The best place to start finding a cure is to talk with your doctor about the options available to you. A medical professional should be able to determine what is causing your snoring problem. Ultimately, if you have any serious medical condition that is causing you to snore, you need to get it treated, Why? Because snoring, left untreated, can lead to serious health problems.

Think about it. It is counterproductive to search for the "best cure" for snoring if you don't know what's causing you to snore in the first place. You could possibly have an issue with a soft palate. Or it may be problem tonsils are causing you to snore. If these issues are the culprit, your doctor may be able to perform a minor surgical procedure to correct the problem and this may be your best cure for snoring. The chances are no natural remedy will cure these medical conditions.

A deviated septum might be another possible cause of your snoring. Simple surgery to repair a deviated septum may relieve your snoring by clearing up the area the air passages through your nose. Your doctor can tell you if this is your problem and how it can be solved.

You probably don't want to hear it, but sleep apnea is another possibility. Your doctor will probably ask your mate if there are intervals during the night when you make no sound. If so, this is a likely symptom of sleep apnea. Please take this diagnosis very seriously if your physician tells you this is the cause of your snoring. Sleep apnea can be a serious medical condition. Why?

Simply put, sleep apnea causes people to stop breathing during the night, which in turn forces bursts of air through the air passages which results in snoring. Testing at a sleep study lab is required to confirm sleep apnea. For persons diagnosed with sleep apnea the best cure for snoring involves using a CPAP mask to breathe properly during sleep.

Everyone would like a non-evasive, natural remedy to help them stop snoring. But you must be realistic. You won't find your "best cure" for snoring without first knowing the cause. If you snore because of a true medical condition, you need to be treated by your doctor, and, I'm sorry to say, sometimes that may require surgery.

OK. Surgery is recommended. Now what? You should feel free to get a second opinion from a specialist. And you can let your doctor know you would prefer a more natural treatment, one that is less evasive. But when all is said and done, you may have to accept the fact that a surgical procedure is your best cure for snoring. After all, your health is at stake. And you and your partner both need a good night's sleep!

Proper Treatment for Ankle Sprains

By Andrew Mitchell

About ten percent of emergency department visits are the result of ankle injury. Most of these injuries are simple ankle sprains. These injuries are most commonly treated with RICE therapy. Patients are instructed to rest and ice the joint for 20 minutes sessions. Then, the injury is wrapped in compression bandages and elevated. The Jones compression uses alternate layers of elastic bandages and compression bandages. Finally, patients are instructed to elevate the ankle. To reduce pain, ibuprofen is usually provided. Patients who are ibuprofen-intolerant are given acetaminophen instead. This is the common procedure for ankle injuries.

RICE therapy has been proven effective but it does nothing to prevent future ankle injuries. The RICE technique is used as damage control for the initial injury but, further treatment must be done to prevent future damage. Future injury prevention is important because it is estimated that 25% to 40% of ankle sprains are recurrent injuries. If the original injury is improperly treated, it is likely the patient will suffer from future injury and increased disability. Osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT, may be the much needed solution.

This treatment gives each patient the individual care that they require. Treatment varies patient to patient and ankle to ankle. The osteopath is responsible for deciding what treatment each injury calls for. Soft tissue treatments are often prescribed. Ankle injuries can be treated with a variety of soft tissue techniques. The average treatment session usually lasts 10-20 minutes. Studies have proven that OMT sessions lower the pain level and provide patients with an increased range of motion.

There are several soft tissue techniques. By analyzing the relation of the bones, from the ankle to the toe, the osteopath can pinpoint which areas require the most attention. This system ensures that the patient receives treatment that is most beneficial. There are a number of other techniques to treat ankle injury. Physicians can also use muscle energy and strain/counter-strain techniques. Lymphatic drainage is also a very effective was of reducing pain. Fluid around the joints increases pain and decreases mobility.

Ankle sprains are serious injuries that require proper treatment. Clinicians strive to ensure proper function of the ankle, increase the range of motion, and reduce the amount of fluid that builds up around the joint. Brief OMT sessions reduce swelling and decrease the level of pain. Even a single OMT treatment in the emergency department can dramatically improve acute ankle injury recovery.

Clearly, ankle injury is a serious problem. Untreated injuries can lead to improper healing and permanent disability. Fortunately, treatment can be easily received. RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) therapy and osteopath sessions will reduce pain and make for a speedy recovery. Proper care can also prevent future ankle damage.

The Signs of an Unhealthy Relationship or Lover :The Top 10 Signs

By Rebecca Adams

A great relationship can be a source of support, fun and fufillment. But no one said it was every going to be a walk in the park. Relationship success takes time, effort and commitment.

Good solid honest advice is one of the best things you could have when making a relationship decision. The right advice from the right people could make all the difference when evaluating a mate or situation.

Relationships are often depicted in soudbites. The man and women meet unexpectedly, they have a fantastic time, and if things don't work they leave each other with a smile on their face and a spring in their step. The art of good relating, the tools and strategies are never mentioned.

Erm ok.

If you hear the neighbours whispering when you leave the house - they could be referring to you as either a spineless jellyfish or a quitter, depending on whether you stay in the unhappy relationship or leave.

Now that over two thirds of marriages end in divorce, the importance of good quality advice is paramount. Keep your eyes and ears open, right from the beginning. Make silent notes (or even written) of the behaviour that bothers you and don't make excuses for them. Similarly don't have unreasonable or unrealistic expectations.

Be Smart Think Smart.

Look Out For These Unhealthy Relationship Types

1. The Abusive

I know I don't have to say it - but I will anyway. Physical abuse is not acceptable. If you are at the receiving end, get out now.

Take action to maintain your safety - immediately. Discuss the 'relationship' only from a safe distance if you still think that there may be something to salvage.

Remember you are only responsible for your own emotions and feelings, you are not responsible for their issues, childhood, and sulks. Do not be a therapist or parent to them or they will never grow, and you will be drained of any energy. Seek professional advice and help immediately.

2. The Bitter One

They never notice your success, accomplishments, new shirt or haircut. They love to rub your mistakes or weaknesses in your face, and completely overlook your positive traits.

They are emotional vampires. Putting you and your accomplishments down makes their small and insignificant selves feel better

If you still want to work on development the 'relationship' I recommend using a neutral third party as they will point out their behaviour to them in a more subtle manner. If you want out - then I recommend fast action while you still have your self-esteem.

3. The Love Rat

Something doesn't seem quite right but you're not sure what it is. They love to interrogate you about your calls, cell phone or emails, but are very cagey about their stuff and movements.

They love to project their guilty selves on to you - making you responsible for their suspicions, moods, stress and taxes.

Get proof and get out soon.

4. The Power Hungry

Does the thought of you spending time with friends and family - bring on a case of the severe sulk?

Does the prospect of you having fun with friends and family bring on unexplained sickness, problems, or time delays?

Despite your reassurances, they are insecure and threatended by those close to you.

If you are still willing to work on this - do so with the help of a neutral third party. But do ask yourself how long you are willing to put up with this?

5. Not Tonight Honey - I'm Reading

If your drives are very different, or one of you recently had a loss of drive, then this of course could result in a bit of future tension.

This could be easily rectified by a bit of help and support in other areas of your lives. Speak openly with your beloved to better understand the situation.

Sensitivity and tact are very important in this situation. And problems in the bedroom could actually be an indication of problems in other areas of the relationship - i.e. anger, resentment, lack of and intimacy and boredom.

6. The Free Spirit

They belong to the 60's - carefree yet not so single.

They may actually be in more need of a parent then a partner. Often needy, posessive, and irresponsible they love to be taken care of.

You will end up drained, tired and resentful as you end up giving more than you get.

7. In Need of Repair

These poor little 'victims' have a history of being hurt and taken for granted.

The hurts would fill an entire encyclopedia if only they had the will to write them down.

Due to the fragile nature of their egos, they will never accept your love and attention as the 'real deal'.

Warning - you may get bored of re-assuring them. The intervention of a neutral third party will help point out their negative and gloomy outlook.

8. Self Love Gone Too Far

Their mum or dad told them that they were fabulous, the best thing since sliced bread. Unfortunately for you - they believed it.

They will always be the innocent party, as they could never do anything wrong. And what's worse - they will be very attached to their mother's or father's apron strings.

A reality check is in order here. If they do not listen to you, get a neutral third party involved.

If they still do not see the light, give them their marching orders.

9. No Dirtiness - Unless it Verbal

If hygiene is a foreign word to them, I suggest getting out fast. Ok I admit it - I am a bit anal. However I don't see how regular bathing could harm anyone!

I'm sure good personal care is a sign of a healthy mind - well atleast it's a start. Why would you expect anything less?

10. Hello - Is it Me Your Looking For?

These people are just plain inconsiderate. They are so focused on themselves and their needs and goals that they forget that you are there. They expect you to ask about them, pick them up when their chips are down, wipe their faces - but God forbid you should expect anything in return.

Implement the 'three strikes and you're out' rule. Tell them in simple and straightforward terms - the minimum behaviour, manners and consideration that you expect from them. If they still don't get after the second 'talk' send them on their way.

Get out or you will turn in to their door mat.

Now that you have the ' 10 signs ' under your belt, you will be far more prepared when dealing with difficult situations. However always keep in mind that your behaviour may also have something to do with theirs. Therefore always first look at yourself and how you are contributing to the relationship. If you feel that you have been civil and reasonable, have honestly expressed your thoughts and things still haven't improved (despite some neutral third party help), then it's time to make some tough decisions.

Just keep in mind that you deserve to be treated with respect, consideration, and appreciation at all times.

5 Questions To Ask Before Starting Any Meal Replacement Diet

By Dorthy Weatherbush

Before undertaking a meal replacement program, you should ask some simple but very important questions. Protect your health and your pocketbook by asking the following five questions:

1. Does the program work? The first question may seem obvious, but many do not even bother to ask. Does the program actually work? Your goal in being on any diet is weight loss. Stray away from programs that cannot prove how well they work or that do not provide any guidance or support. If a program does what it says, it should be able to provide success stories from some of its customers. If it can't you should start looking elsewhere.

2. What kind of professional supervision is provided? Meal replacement programs should always be undertaken while under proper medical supervision. Emotional support and medical evaluation are both critical to any weight loss program, particularly a meal replacement program. Because you are spending your time and money in a program, the program should offer you in return the professional guidance you need to be successful at reaching your goals.

3. What sort of continuous maintenance support do you offer? Losing weight is just the first step. It is only the beginning of a lifelong journey to having a healthy lifestyle and healthy dietary habits. In order to stay on track, you are going to need help. Pick programs that help you stay motivated and connected with continuous support, and that offer help in the event that you should start to regain any weight.

4. How much does it cost? The important point of this question is not that you should try to skimp out and choose the "cheapest" program, but you should choose a program that gives you your money's worth. You could end up paying thousands of dollars for food, enrollment fees, and other hidden fees for a regimen that is poorly designed that doesn't work. Furthermore, it may offer no training or support. However, a program that is less expensive could be highly effective. All in all, choose the best program that fits with your budget.

5. Are there hidden fees, and can you get a refund? A true sign of confidence is a weight loss program that offers a money back guarantee. A program that is confident in what it can do will have no problems with offering to give you your money back if you are not completely satisfied with the results. Also, be careful of hidden fees, like additional consultation and supplement fees. Reputable weight loss programs will always be upfront with what it's going to cost you to participate.

When looking at all of these factors, Medifast stands out against every other meal replacement program. It is a proven and effective program and is backed by qualified professional medical support. They will help connect you with a physician that is familiar with the program. The cost of the program is affordable - it costs what on average a single person spends on a month's groceries. Any unused, unopened products can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. Coaching and assistance are offered online and in person at Medifast centers all over the country. Like others have already done, discover how Medifast can help you on your way to weight loss.

About Whey Protein

By June Killengsly

In years past, whey was viewed and used as a waste product and sprayed back onto farmer's crops to add nitrogen back into the soil. Sometime in the early 80's it was discovered that whey was a very high quality protein, unique in its amino acid content and biologically active. It was quickly discovered that whey outperformed the gold standard protein, egg white. In fact, on the biological value scale, which measures how much protein consumed is actually absorbed or retained and used by the body, egg white is 100 and whey is 107, so whey really is the gold standard for high protein quality.

Whey, in its raw liquid form, contains lactose, fat and cholesterol. So before spray drying if somebody consumed whey protein it also meant one would take in a significant amount of lactose and fat. Sometime in the mid-80's two processes were discovered that could concentrate the protein content of the liquid stream, then spray dried to remove the water. One was ion-exchange and the other was micro-filtration. Both these methods consisted of removing the non-protein components so they could be spray dried into a highly concentrated whey protein powder.

Whey protein is a natural byproduct from enzyme and acid produced cheese making. Whey protein is a component of all mammalian milk. The percentage of protein in cow's milk is 3.75%. The total protein content is made up of 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein. During the cheese making process coagulation of the casein protein begins, this is the curd, and what's left is a liquid stream of whey.

Two whey protein powders were named: Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Isolate. Whey Protein Concentrate has a protein content of about 80% and Whey Protein Isolate has a protein content of 90%. New technology developed in 2005 can now isolate whey protein in excess of 95%.Whey protein is a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids needed for muscle growth and repair from stressful events, i.e. resistance training, endurance training, life-stressors.

Whey is made up of many protein fractions. The main two are Beta-Lactoglobulin and Alpha-Lactalbumin. These two proteins alone make up 75% of the protein content in whey. Other protein fractions include Glycomacropeptide, Lactoferrin, Bovine Serum Albumin, Immunoglobulins, Lactoperoxidase, Lysozyme, Relaxin, Gamma-globulins, Lactollin and B-Microglobulin. However, new fractions will be discovered with the progression in new protein isolation techniques.
