Wheys Nasty Side Effects: Fact or Fiction?

By Bruce Gross

There are a lot of bodybuilders who dont touch whey because they think that there are too many side effects to it. But is it really true? Here is the real truth behind wheys side effects and whether or not it is going to be safe to take.

A lot of people who have reactions to whey complain about an upset stomach. Whey is made from the byproducts of cheese, so it is definitely possible to get a stomachache if you take it. If you are sensitive or allergic to milk, you probably shouldnt supplement with whey protein. If you do see a reaction from whey protein, it is often the same reaction as a milk allergy " gas, bloating, diarrhea or a stomachache. If you notice any of these symptoms after taking whey, you are probably going to want to stop taking whey protein. Chances are, once you stop using whey protein, they negative symptoms are going to go away. If you already know that milk doesnt agree with you, you should find a different protein to use instead.

Whey protein is often said to be responsible for wrecking livers and kidneys. It is unknown whether or not this is true. It is known that whey protein isnt more difficult for your kidneys or liver to process than other protein substitutes. The harm comes when you add too much protein to your diet. For bodybuilders who need the extra protein and are careful using it, it is probably not going to be a problem. If you arent a bodybuilder and consume too much protein, it is going to be difficult for your body to process it, and it could turn into a problem. Consuming too much protein will eventually lead to your body having troubles digesting it properly.

Because the effects of whey protein on your liver and kidneys are very serious, you should think about it before you start taking this supplement. If you remember that whey protein is no more dangerous than other protein supplements containing a lot of protein, you are going to find the decision easier to make. There are so many benefits to taking whey protein if you remember that you need to be careful about too much protein in your diet. The vast majority of weightlifters are going to find that the benefits of whey are going to far outweigh the risks.

A third danger in using whey protein is that it could lead to osteoporosis. This is another major side effect that you might want to consider before starting whey protein. However, the increased risk of osteoporosis is only seen in long term use. If you are just going to use whey protein, or any other protein supplement, for a couple of months to help you to get leaner, you are probably not going to have a problem with this. Again, this is something you might want to discuss with your doctor before starting the use of whey or any other protein supplement.

Yes, there are side effects to using whey protein, just as there are side effects to using any protein supplement. These side effects are usually going to be negated by the benefits because these supplements are going to help you to live a healthier life. Bodybuilders who swear off whey protein, but then use other proteins are going to find that the side effects are the same if not worse. Whey protein really is one of the best protein supplements that you can use.
